Fire Safety Webquest!

The kids and I are doing a fire safety theme next week, which will include a trip to the regional fire museum, a trip to FireZone, and a special event where firefighters bring a truck to a  local park. I've recently discovered webquests and am trying to use them with the older kids this summer. I couldn't find a fire safety webquest I really liked, so I decided to create my own! I've tried to make it simple, because some of the kids in my house have very low interest and motivation levels (aka Rafael!) Feel free to use this! (You'll have to help kids find some of the correct parts of sites, since for some of them I couldn't create links to the specific parts I wanted.)

INTRODUCTION
Fire can be lots of fun! It is fun to have a campfire, and roast marshmallows and hot dogs.

It is fun to blow out candles on a birthday cake.

It is fun to watch a fireworks show.

But fire can also be very dangerous!

There are important rules to follow that help keep us safe when we're around fire.

TASK
We are going to use the Internet to learn some important rules about fire safety. Later, we will make a poster about fire safety, to show our friends and family members everything we've learned! Click on each link to do an activity about fire safety.

PROCESS

1. Watch "Get Low And Go" and and answer the question at the end.

2. Read about Stop Drop And Roll, and watch the demonstration.

3. Complete a lesson and a quiz about fire safety! Click on "Home Safety," "Smoke Alarms," "Escaping From A Fire," and "Hazard House." Finally, click on "Become a Jr. Fire Marshall" to print out your award certificate! (You can also play the other games while you're there, if you want.)

EVALUATION
Now its time to show everyone what you've learned. Make your own fire safety poster! You could make a poster about smoke alarms, Stop Drop and Roll, Get Low And Go, the importance of never touching matches or lighters when you're a kid, or all of the above! If you'd like, you can take a picture of your poster and send it here, and I'll post it on this site!
